Volume vs Efficiency Outliers by Position: 23-24 Season
The traditional thinking goes that you either want players who efficiently use a lot of possessions (and it’s okay if they’re not possession positive) or players who pet you a lot of possessions through rebounds, stocks, and not turning the ball over (and it’s okay if they don’t score a lot of points).

Typically we find that players who use a lot of possessions use them efficiently:


I wanted to look at which players at each position:

• Score efficiently at volume
• Shoot a lot but inefficiently
• Don’t shoot but when they do it’s efficient
• Don’t shoot and for good reason

To make the outliers more clear, I compared each player to other players of their position by:

• Calculating their PPP and Possessions Used
• Calculating the mean and standard deviation of each metric for each position
• Percentile ranking vs other players at their position based on a normal distribution

This is a fairly safe assumption as the curves for each metric are close to normal (nice job Ashes):
