FA Big Butt Power Rankings
Oldie article and hopefully goodie: a "quick" exercise power ranking the free agents listed at Center and Power Forward. A quick story before we start - besides a couple hot dogs, this article filled a very hungover train ride back from Boston this afternoon. When getting off, the guy ahead of me turned and asked if I was a scout. I had no idea what he was talking about. Then I realized he was talking about this and laughed. Then we talked about Hassan Whiteside for five minutes. Whiteside fans are everywhere!
Name / Position / Height / Weight / Age / Inside / Outside / Handling / Defense / Rebounding / Potential
------------------------------------------------------
Rui Hachimura PF 6'8'' 230 25 A- B D- A- A- B Suns
Total star. Has been an around 30ppg scorer on plus defense and rebounding at a very shallow position in SLN. Two All-League selections in three years in SLN. Obvious full max.
Goga Bitadze PF 6'11'' 250 24 C+ C+ C B+ A- B Nuggets
Very good rebounder, extremely stocky. There may only be five or so PFs definitively better than Bitadze, and that's situational to a degree.
Udoka Azubuike C 6'10'' 280 24 C+ D- F B+ A- A Bullets
The A potential and rebounding / defense ratings are intriguing. Did not have a very impressive statline last season. Bullets have a lot of room under the HC so I expect him to get a serious offer.
Blake Griffin PF 6'9'' 250 34 A- C+ C- A- A- D Bulls
Rounded into a nice player. Above average on offense, and pretty stocky while being turnover efficient. Definitely a top 10 PF still.
Clint Capela C 6'10'' 240 29 C+ D+ D+ A- B+ C Grizzlies
About average on the boards but fairly stocky. Doesn't shoot much. Should make well above the MLE.
Jared Sullinger C 6'9'' 260 31 B- C C A A- C Clippers
Fine starter and excellent backup 4/5 candidate. No idea how he got to flat A defense. Good rebounder, decent stocks, but unfortunately very turnover prone.
Daniel Gafford C 6'10'' 234 25 C+ C- D B+ A- C Knicks
Prototypical no-offense center type. Could be a good TC away from being a decent starter. As is, a helpful third big. Would be thrilled to get him on an MLE.
Naz Reid C 6'9'' 264 24 B+ B C- B B B Bullets
Made All Rookie but no honors since. Decent all-around profile. Is a little more turnover prone than you'd want or expect for a guy that hasn't cracked 30mpg yet. Feel like his destiny is as a backup 4/5 type. If the turnvovers could come down a bit, his offense could be helpful.
Willie Cauley-Stein C 7'0'' 240 30 B D+ C- A- B+ D Bucks
Offense is not good at all. Probably a plus two or three stock guy as a starter. Rebounding is fine. Is a lower end starter option or a really good backup
Draymond Green PF 6'6'' 230 33 B+ C B- A- A- D Hornets
Has become decent, but is maybe flattered by his ratings. Stocks and turnover were pretty close to even last season. Rebounding is fine but not a weapon. Last year was a bit of a step down for him compared to the previous two years. Is 33 so that's not totally unexpected.
DeMarcus Cousins C 6'11'' 270 33 A- B+ C- B- B+ D Cavaliers
I don't think he's a winning player as a starter any more, but his box score and rate numbers are good. Above average scorer, and fine on the boards. Think you give up a lot defensively starting him.
Hassan Whiteside C 7'0'' 265 34 C+ D+ D- C A- D 76ers
Offense is still effecient, and 0 passing. Rebounding is good.
Jaxson Hayes C 7'0'' 220 23 B C+ D B- B B Kings
Slightly stock positive, not a good rebounder. Decent jump shot. At just 23 after a long NDL stint, I'd think there should be upside here. Worth an MLE flier perhaps.
Jonas Valanciunas C 6'11'' 265 32 B C+ C B+ B+ C Pistons
Good depth big piece. Wouldn't be happy with him as a starter, but should be fine as a backup 4/5. Wouldn't leap to give him an MLE but I bet he gets one.
Wendell Carter Jr. C 6'10'' 270 24 B C+ C B+ B B Kings
Ratings look a little bit better than he plays, I'm afraid. Not a stock positive or rebound positive player yet. Would happily take a flier on him as an LLE, or maybe an MLE if I were really in a pinch.
Anthony Bennett PF 6'8'' 245 30 B C D B B+ D Pistons
Both stock and turnover efficient and a pretty good rebounder last season. Decent option?
Tristan Thompson C 6'9'' 254 32 B- C- C- B B D Lakers
Pretty decent rebounding. Has had some stocky seasons historically.
Nikola Vucevic C 6'10'' 260 33 B B- C- B+ B- D Pistons
Still pretty decent stats. Has a lot of volume offensively which isn't ideal, but not super turnover prone at least. Rebounds better than the rating indicates. Useful third big.
Zion Williamson PF 6'6'' 284 23 A+ C- C+ C B B Nets
Not sure what to do with Zion. At some point he'll make his way to an inside offense as a cheap piece, and find a real home. Currently is not good at all. Among the worst full time players at his position. High usage on offense but below the team-level points per possession median. Not a strong rebounder. I'd imagine he'll get a high AAV offer over a year or two, but if I'm Steven, I'd rather use my cap space elsewhere, and wouldn't be upset if he walked.
Terrence Jones PF 6'9'' 252 32 C C+ C B- C+ D Knicks
Extremely stocky. Positional defense must be pretty poor. Rebounding is not good
Skal Labissiere PF 6'10'' 235 27 C C+ D B+ B C Bullets
Has been decent in very limited minutes so far. Stocks look good? I'd give him a shot as a backup 4/5. Should get somewhere between the LLE and a vet min.
Thomas Bryant C 6'10'' 248 26 B- C+ C- B- C+ C Rockets
Surprisingly stocky. Not very impressive on the boards. Kind of an intersting minimum level depth guy.
Thomas Robinson C 6'10'' 237 32 B- D+ D+ B+ B+ D Nuggets
A useful backup. Good rebounder, not terribly stocky. Never shoots. I tried to trade him for RP once when tanking and no one would take him.
Bobby Portis PF 6'10'' 250 28 C+ B- D+ B- B+ C Kings
Such a classic Kings guy. Scoring splits are kinda good and he's a decent rebounder, but turns it over too much and is a negative stock guy. Fourth or fifth big.
Eddy Curry C 7'0'' 295 41 B D+ F- C+ A- F Celtics
Did 1.5 turnover last year on 8.6 ppg. Good rebounder still, blocks are good, not many steals. Blocking must be all he can do on defense
Guerschon Yabusele PF 6'8'' 260 28 B C+ C B- B- D Clippers
He doesn't look totally terrible? Who's been watching the Sixers this season? Let Guerschon cook.
Mike Muscala PF 6'10'' 240 32 B B- D B C+ D Kings
A helpful depth guy. Jump shot is wet. Some stocks. pretty turnover efficient.
Christian Wood PF 6'8'' 214 28 B+ C+ C B- B- C Heat
Just fine, but doesn't stand out in any area of the game. Roughly even stocks and turnovers. Offense is fine-ish.
Lloyd Nichols PF 6'10'' 226 33 C C- D C A- B Kings
Fake person! Very strong rebounder, not much else here. I think these guys tend to be kind of useful as fourth or fifth big options (Sean May for example). Will get a veteran minimum deal somewhere. Has 13 years of experience on his resume but won't tell anyone where they were.
Brook Lopez C 7'0'' 282 35 C+ C+ C+ A- C F Timberwolves
Stocky, but not a good rebounder at all.
Cody Zeller C 6'11'' 240 31 C+ C C- C+ B+ C Nuggets
Close to average rebounder, slightly stock to turnover postitive, otherwise not notable. Reasonable ball security.
Dewayne Dedmon C 7'0'' 245 34 C B- C- C+ B+ D Celtics
Not as good on the boards as you'd think. Guessing the positional defense is very poor. Some stocks.
Cole Aldrich C 6'11'' 250 35 C- C- D- C+ B D Timberwolves
A fine rebounder and pretty stocky. Has never played a ton.
Eric Paschall PF 6'6'' 255 27 A- C+ D+ C C+ C Raptors
Kind of a poor man's Zion?
Tyler Lydon PF 6'10'' 225 27 C A- D- C+ C C Clippers
Nice jumper. Slightly stock positive. That's it.
Nathan Knight PF 6'8'' 253 26 B- B C C+ B- D Bucks
College of William and Mary!
Richaun Holmes C 6'10'' 235 30 B- C D B B C Nuggets
Totally fine depth guy.
Alex Len C 7'0'' 250 30 B- C C- A- C+ C Mavericks
Basically only offers postional defense. Minimum / leftovers guy.
Quincy Acy PF 6'7'' 240 33 B- C+ C- B B- D Pistons
Slightly flattered by his ratings. You can do better.
Noah Vonleh C 6'10'' 257 28 C C+ C- C+ B+ D Bucks
Good rebounder. Slightly stock to turnover positive. Always thought he'd be good IRL.
Kyle Kuzma PF 6'9'' 221 28 B B C+ B- C+ C Raptors
Not terrible, but not a good enoughs scorer to matter, and offers nothing on defense or the boards. Leftovers guy.
Tobias Harris PF 6'8'' 226 31 B- B C C+ B- D Heat
Super blah.
Reggie Perry PF 6'8'' 250 23 C C C- C+ B D SuperSonics
Hasn't cracked any rotation yet.
E.J. Liddell PF 6'7'' 243 23 C B C- C C B Heat
Not much to go on here. Jump shot looks okay?
Jake LaRavia PF 6'8'' 227 22 C+ B- C- C+ C B Jazz
Same deal as Liddel but maybe a higher starting point.
Amir Johnson PF 6'9'' 240 36 C D+ D C A- D 76ers
Good ish rebounder. Nothing else of note.
Dejuan Blair C 6'7'' 270 34 C C- C- B B D Pistons
Good rebounder. Immune to ACL injury. Once the bell of the ball in leftovers. Pretty turnover prone.
Willy Hernangomez C 6'11'' 250 30 B- C+ D C A- D Hornets
Good rebounder. Does nothing else well. Negative stock / turnover guy.
Bruno Fernando C 6'9'' 240 25 B- C- F+ C B+ D Kings
Good rebounder, negative stocks. Feel like I've written that 20 times. F+ handle remains funny.
Mfiondu Kabengele PF 6'9'' 250 26 B- B- D- B- C+ C Warriors
52 career minutes across four seasons. Maybe could have done something in the NDL? Showed flashes of stocks in some extremely limited minutes.
Nick Richards C 7'0'' 240 26 C+ C- D C+ B- C Raptors
Totally fine as a minimum depth piece.
Frank Kaminsky C 7'0'' 240 30 B- C+ D+ C C+ C Raptors
Decent jumper. Not a good rebounder. Not a good defender. Not very stocky.
Kenneth Faried PF 6'8'' 220 34 B+ C- D+ C+ B C Heat
Leftover guy at best. Rebounds a tiny bit.
Marc Gasol C 6'11'' 255 39 B- C C- C B- D Heat
Cmon man, pack it in. Anyone that signs this guy is getting the tanking police called on them.
