Trading a Star, the details

Post by Merv »

So you’ve decided it’s time to trade your star…let’s sit down and have a chat about it. I went back and looked at some major blockbusters and how they’ve aged so you don’t have to. In order to give things appropriate time to develop, the first season trades will be looked at from were from the end of the BBB era (RIP LaVar). [Editor’s note: After looking up the eleventy billion trades I was going to cover, I figured the last frenzy to the BBB era was a nice run to pick from] I wanted to spend a legit amount of time sifting through deals and finding out more about these returns and the trees that sprung from them. People are more than welcome to be like X Player ain’t no star I ever heard of, and they could be right. In this case, I figured more > less. Also, what I learned going through these completed trades pages, we do an absolute shit ton of blockbusters despite the very obvious negative “trade market is dead” narrative. I got to about page 16 then I decided to go hunt for some major deals. All trades will be listed in chronological order.

Trade 1: Hawks – Sixers (12/26/24)
ATL trades:
Playoff MVP LeBron James
2 BBBucks

PHI trades:
Deandre Jordan
Denzel Valentine
Dylan Windler
25/26 PHI SRP
1069RP

So, where to start. Heimer trades King James right after winning a title. Comments that swiftly followed included, “Bro what, How high are y’all” – Twitter user @DRock696969 and “Great move for both sides” – R/SLN user @Boredo1.

I mean, we all know how insane this was. Heimer swung for the fences with LeBron, technically trades him MID PLAYOFFS, then won the title. Hawks had peaked…so we thought. Deandre would help break an SLN wins record. They’re now currently in the ECF the following season and the 76ers are tanking but have LeBron…who they paid for?

Hindsight Grade:
Hawks: A++++ (WINS RECORD)
76ers: C’s get degrees and maybe Wemby

Trade 2: Suns – Nets (12/10/24)
Suns trade:
Suns 22 FRP (#26 Ousmane Dieng)
Suns 23 FRP (#25)
Magic 22 FRP (#27 Fanbo Zeng)
1000 RP
Beasley

Nets trade:
Blake Griffin

X user @joe states, “Suns are back!” and tumblr user @GSDUBSDMV made a journal about how the Suns are going to the moon and “its eclipse szn now.”

Blake was the final piece sold off of a Nets team that ended up disappointing over time more than anything. 3 FRPs at the time was quite a return for Blake, however those picks were all 3 25 or later so it really hasn’t turned into much for the Nets unless Dieng or Zeng pop in TC. Blake shined for the Suns as they rose as true contenders once again.

Hindsight Grade:
Suns: B+ (Maybe an overpay in the moment but Blake produced)
Nets: B- (Didn’t turn into much yet)

Trade 3: Bullets – Nets (12/4/24)
Washington Ballers send
Zion Williamson
Deandre Ayton (S/T for GSW 23 [#24], GSW 24)
Sergio Llull
CLE 21 FRP (#13 Charles Bassey)
SA 21 FRP (#10, Traded back 1 pick for 11 [Cam Comic Thomas] and 29 [Tre Mann]
POR 21 FRP (#12 Herb Jones)
LAL 21 FRP (#23 Traded for ORL 23, #13 pre lotto)
LAL 22 FRP (#19 Scotty Pippen Jr.)

Brooklyn Ballers send
Anthony Davis

A trade huge on social media, R/SLN user @SoNICKZZZ says, “Never thought I’d see it! Wes buying big!!!”, Bluesky user @t0ngers “that’s a trade”, Truth social user @XTRACT “Is anyone else hard right now?”, and a ghost known as bpankin commented “this dope!”

Wes swung real bigly for AD and it’s finally starting to pay off with an appearance in the ECF. The Nets end of this consists of a lot in terms of quantity and is a real TBD in quality. Ayton had a nice statistical season then was traded on a full baby max to Dallas who quickly pivoted off of Ayton. He’s settled in as an inside force in the desert. Zion has been up and down and will enter UFA. Herb looks the best of these picks unless my pick jumps to 1 and Steven lands Wemby. It will be interesting to see these guys continue to TC. Right now, the Nets return is fine and AD is living up to his potential in Washington.

Hindsight Grade:
Bullets: A- (AD is good and is propelling the Bullets forward, but it was a lot of stuff)
Nets: B+ (A lot of stuff, grade still up in the air)

Trade 4: Spurs – Knicks (11/25/24)
Knicks Send:
Rudy Carlton Gay Jr.
NYK 24 FRP
NYK 25 FRP (Turned into Jabari Parker)
NYK 26 FRP (Turned into Nic Claxton)

Spurs Send:
Tyus Jones
Terry Rozier
Ty Lawson

Social media was completely asleep to this trade. Probably because Tyus Jones is a bland albeit very good PG. Tyus fit in perfectly for a team with no PG and turned the Knicks into a regular season powerhouse that has generally fallen victim to KD, the SLN GOAT. It’s still early to see about the Spurs end of this deal but early returns look like NYK 24 will be mid 20’s and the other two were traded for adequate roster pieces in Jabari Parker and Nic Claxton.

Hindsight Grade:
NYK: A (Stud PG, solved a key roster issue)
SAS: C- (Not great Bob)

Trade 5: Spurs – Nuggets – Sonics (11/22/24)
Spurs Receive:
Mikal Bridges
Darius Garland
Duncan Robinson
Alpha Kaba
Alex Caruso
SAS 22 FRP (Jaden Ivey)
SAS 23 FRP (#16)
SAS 24 FRP
SAS 25 FRP
SEA 23 FRP (Turned into Lu Dort)
420 RP

Sonics Receive:
Jaylen Brown

Nuggets Receive:
Lonzo Ball

Oh the BBBallers…shockingly little reaction from social media on this. Probably because all the real kerfuffle was in the DMs. r/SLN user @Hoffer saw this return and said “Wowza Jordo you actually did it!”

Trading a stud wing in his prime on Y1 of a baby max was always going to demand a big return. On top of this, Kipke desperately wanted to assemble the Big Ballers. Nick had Lonzo, Kipke had LaMelo and Gelo was in FA. The stable was set for a fiery negotiation. Boy oh boy did Jordo walk away with a hell of a return. Bridges is solid, Duncan turned out to be way better than expected and that’s a lot of firsts. It’s a shame the centerpiece prospect, Garland, is just kinda meh. Jaylen Brown has been a solid player for the Sonics but never ascended to a top 5 in his position level player like it seemed he might. For the Nuggets…well they won 55 games this year and have Joel Embiid, so let’s just ignore the Ball era ever happened.

Hindsight Grades:
Spurs: A (Got a ton of useful things and his picks)
Sonics: B- (I mean, it had to be a B-)
Nuggets: C- for trying? RIP BBB

Trade 6: Bulls – Clippers (11/20/24)
Bulls Trade:
ORL 22 FRP (Traded for 1100 RP)
CHI 26 FRP
100 RP
Rudy Fernandez
Jarrett Jack
Jamal Sampson

Clippers Trade:
Derrick Rose

I commented about being offended by the valuation of my pick but this was really another subdued comment thread. If only we knew what a DRose and Luka backcourt would be capable of. If I remember correctly, this was a trade that just kind of popped up out of nowhere and ended up being a nice grab by Matt. We will have to wait and see what CHI 26 turns into, but odds are it won’t be much at this rate. My FRP was moved for 1100 RP to help fund a Collin Sexton SC, while I’d say that’s not a great return, it would end up being 26 which goes for much less than 1100 RP.

Hindsight Grade:
Bulls: A (Key piece on elite team)
Clippers: B (Feels a little light?)

Trade 7: Nuggets – Bucks (10/31/24)
Bucks trade:
Gafford (Traded for Embiid)
Hart (Traded for SAS 22/23 FRP)
Terence Davis (NDL) (Traded for Kawhi)
Batum
Vonleh
2023 Bucks 1st (Traded for Embiid)
2024 bucks 1st (Traded for Embiid)
2025 bucks 1st (Traded for Embiid)
750 RP

Nuggets trade:
Otto (Traded for Dillon Brooks, Time Lord, TRob, and $1 BB Buck)
Redick
Metu (NDL)

A few social media comments on this one. 2 pretty great comments from an X account we are pretty sure is a burner for someone in the industry, @Skillz wrote “Derek wyd.” And “The gall on Kipke to ask for 750 RPs after this pillaging”

Derek was really high on Otto and liked the fit even if it might be an overpay. So one might wonder why he was traded so soon afterwards. Either way, hell of a return for Kipke that clearly paved the road to Joel Embiid. The Bucks never ascended to the heights they’d have liked to in the OPJ era and Joel Embiid is mysteriously healthy in the Rocky Mountains leading the Nuggets through the West.

Hindsight Grade:
Nuggets: A+ (Heart of the Embiid trade and a great return)
Bucks: C- (Not great Bob)

Trade 8: Pacers – Mavs (10/22/24)
Pacers trade:
Spencer Dinwiddie (Traded for POR 2020 FRP #15 Isaiah Stewart which was sent to IND for Cole Anthony?)
Talen Horton-Tucker (Would get traded back to IND for IND 22 [Traded in a package for Nerlens which became CHI 27 which became LaMelo])
Sean May (Traded for RP)
LAL 20 (#24, Traded to CLE for #12, Patrick Williams who was traded for LaMelo)
GSW 23 (Traded for Ayton who was traded for VAN 23 [Traded for Gelo], PHX 25, 1000 RP)
GSW 24 (Traded for Ayton)

Mavs trade:
De'Aaron Fox
Noah Vonleh
Nik Stauskas

Twitter user @wooohahh (because it’s his IG handle, we should know that) said “lol wtf”. Meanwhile we got 3 different woah’s. And facebook user @MantyLovesWizardCavs said “having Swipa and Sabonis team in in virtual life is pretty cool”.

Mark that under things that didn’t age well IRL. Tong turned this into his new Jrue Holiday and centerpiece of his team for years to come. Meanwhile Hoff made tons of different trades and turned all of this into a very long trade tree but honestly built the core of his team today.

Hindsight Grade:
Pacers: A (Fox is what he hoped)
Mavs: A- (Turned into a lot of stuff, but Fox is real good)

Intermission of honorable mention trades because this has taken multiple hours to go down all of these trade trees so some had to get cut.

Bulls/Heat
JLin, Derrick White, CHI 22/23/24/25 FRP, CHI 24 SRP for Klay, Rondo, Jamal Sampson, and OJ Mayo
OOOOF this backfired. Mighty impressive GM work from Matt to go from trading 4 FRPs and completely missing to absolutely crushing it again now, the power of Luka some not named Nico would say.

Sixers/Raptors
Deandre Jordan (Funnily traded again for LBJ), Yaro, Windler, Jevon Carter, PHI 21, TOR 24/25, 200 RP for LeBron and PHI 20 SRP.
As if you thought I’d entertain a Jwoo trade tree. Jesse is already going to be the death of me. This trade was ok, didn’t turn into a title but seemed fine until Woo traded for his picks back and tanked.

Kings/Mavs
Eric Bledsoe, Montrezl, JaVale McGee for Trey Burke, Leon Powe, JJ Redick, GR3, NJ 21/22/23 (Became FVV), DAL 24, and DAL 23/24 SRP
@t0ngers “wut”. @SoNICKZZZ “huh…I don’t see it.” Dallas won a ‘chip

Nets/Mavs
Rudy Gobert, GR3, NJ 21/22/23 for Blake Griffin
Blake performed but the Nets died. Dallas won a ‘chip

Trade 9: Lakers – Mavs (10/10/24)
Lakeshow Trade:
CJ (Traded to acquire 12th pick in 2020, Patrick Williams)
Fox (See above trade)
Poeltl (Traded back to LAL for LAL 21 and Andrew Wiggins, which led to Trae Young, which led to Donovan Mitchell, which led to….KYRIE IRVING!!!)
LAL 22 (Traded for Trae Young, which led to Donovan Mitchell, which led to….KYRIE IRVING!!!)
LAL 23 (Traded for Mavs 20/21 FRP)
LAL 25 (Traded for Mavs 20/21 FRP)

Mavs Trade:
Kyrie Irving (walked in FA after his resigning was declined)

Comments range from @t0ngers “wtf” (clearly tong loves the word wut), @DRock696969 “THIS LEAGUE”, @MantyLovesWizardCavs “Wowzers”, @TPeetz “Xtractor to many, The General to me”, @InsideORockets “Xtractor heard about his nomination for wgmoty and went crazy” and this meme from @boredo Image

Hoff…might have a trade addiction. He flipped every single piece of this Kyrie return relatively quickly too. Kyrie was an awesome addition for the Lakers and helped make the Bubble Boyz champions. A COVID missed season after that and then walked in FA. It’s hard to say Kyrie’s tenure in LA wasn’t amazing and exactly what GX hoped for, but also, kinda ended about as bad as it could’ve…Kyrie everyone!

Hindsight Grade:
Mavericks: A, he got all this stuff and still got Kyrie Irving with it lol
Lakers: A-

Trade 10: Pacers – Warriors (10/2/24)
Pacers trade
Jrue Holiday
Tarik Black

Warriors trade
Domantas Sabonis
Spencer Dinwiddie (Traded above for Fox)
Rodney Hood (Somehow worth Tyler Herro?!)
Larry Nance
Luke Kennard
GSW 23 (Traded above for Fox)
GSW 24 (Traded above for Fox)

If Jrue offers to re-sign, Warriors also send CHI 21, and Pacers send 400 RP

Jrue would indeed offer to re-sign. Social media was a abuzz with this deadline day surprise. X user @hawkleheimer said “brrtiful trade fellas”, hinge user @TPeetz said “THIS LEAGUUUUEEE DOEEE”, and @Skillz, “This is a good trade”

What a trade this would be. Set up both teams for their runs as playoff teams over the last few seasons. This trade singlehandedly built the current Pacers roster and Jrue Holiday would win MVP and be the focal point of a deadly Warriors attack.

Hindsight Grade:
Warriors: A
Pacers: A+

Trade 11: Magic – Nuggets (8/14/24)
Magic Trade:
Devin Harris
Alex Caruso
Kyle Kuzma
DET 19 FRP (#11, Matisse Thybulle)
DET 21 FRP (Traded for OPJ, see OPJ return above)
ORL 21 FRP (#25, Jay Huff)
500 RP

Nuggets Trade:
Stephen Curry (Traded for DLo)
Tyler Johnson (bum ass)

@Hoffer said “Magic are fun! Nugs get good value! Make the Midwest easier again!” and @RBEEEEZY said “Fun trade! The Orlando Tragic no longer.”

This paved the way for a Nuggets tank. Caruso didn’t really pan out and Kuzma sucked complete ass. Curry spearheaded a bunch of Magic teams that couldn’t get over the hump.

Hindsight Grades:
Magic – A-
Nuggets – B+, sadly these prospects didn’t hit but the OPJ return was sick and Matisse is fun)

Trade 12: Kings – Sonics (8/11/24)
Kings Trade
Pistons 2018 1st (#10, Mikal Bridges)

Sonics Trade
Jazz 2019 1st (#23, Sekou Doumbouya)
Jazz 2020 1st (#21, Jalen Smith)
Kings 2020 1st (#20, Aleksej Pokusevski)
Kings 2021 1st (#20, Deuce McBride)
669 RPs

So this was just funny to do because of how absurd this was in the moment. Turned out to be pretty worth it for Nick because Mikal Bridges has been by far the best of these players. @RBEEEEZY said “Dang Nick you must think my team is about to suck this year”

Trade 13: Kings – Suns (8/6/24)
Kings Trade
Boban The Great (Won title)
Yao Ming
Jordan Hamilton
Thaddeus Young
Spurs 2017 1st (#22) [PJ Dozier]

Suns Trade
Justise Winslow (Traded for Nerlens and CLE 22, which was traded for Wendell Carter and IND 22, which got traded to get out of the HC)
Buddy Hield (Traded for Oubre, Nurkic, VAN 22/23 which led to more trades than I can count)
Jerami Grant (Traded for OPJ which was traded for Gordon Hayward and DAL 20/22/23 which became Mike Beasley and Larry Sanders)
Eddie Griffin (Traded for OPJ which was traded for Gordon Hayward and DAL 20/22/23 which became Mike Beasley and Larry Sanders)
Cory Joseph (Traded for Mike Beasley and Larry Sanders, which was traded for Shabazz, RoCo, PHX 20, SAS 22/23)
Suns 2017 1st (#13) [Josh Hart]
Pistons 2018 1st (see above)
Pistons 2020 1st (Traded for OPJ, which was traded for Gordon Hayward and DAL 20/22/23, which became Mike Beasley and Larry Sanders)
Pistons 2022 1st (#3 Jalen Williams, was traded as a pick for Mike Conley who was traded for VAN 18/19 and John Collins)

@t0ngers said “tyler bruh get back to work on your presentation” and famous IG chef @quadyludes said “livingston / jokic / boban is nasty” [Editor’s note, it was nasty]
Honestly, trying to run down the full tree of Jesse’s trades is a complete pain in the ass and that’s about as far as I can go without spending 12 hours on this. Believe it or not, this started on 2/26 at 4pm and Jesse’s trades have taken at least an hour. When Jesse say he trade, THAT MAN TRADE!

On this deal, the Suns would win a title, and Jesse turned all of this into a ridiculous amount of trades. It is pretty interesting going through all of Jesse’s deals where I think he got a great return here but would have a lesser deal then an amazing deal etc. Only thing is I bet Jesse wishes he kept the DET 22 which became Jalen Williams. Suns are going to retire Jordan Hamilton and Thad into the role player ring of honor and Boban was a force for years.

Hindsight Grade:
Suns – A, they won the title when the goal was be interesting
Kings – A, heck of a return and kept turning it into more

Trade 14: Pistons – Mavs (7/22/24)
Pistons Send:
Kyrie Irving (won title, see above trade)
Gordon Hayward (Funnily enough, would be traded back to the Pistons for Jimmy Butler, then moved in a package for OPJ who would be moved to get his picks back)
Torrey Craig (NDL)
80RP

Mavericks Send:
Jrue Holiday (Traded for Jimmy Butler and stuff)
Harrison Barnes
Jordan Clarkson
DAL20 FRP (Traded in package for OPJ)

@quadyludes said “The 80RP put this one over the top for Hoff”, @MantyLovesWizardCavs remarked “Elite PG leaves the Central and is replaced by... another Elite PG. Oh the central division, what I'd do to escape you” [things really haven’t changed], and @Swamp posted “Wowzers”.

What a deal this would be. Kyrie hit the market despite no real pressure to do so and Hoff made moves to get him. Jrue would have a short stay in Detroit before going to Indiana and winning a title. Kyrie would win a title in Dallas before being traded and since reacquired. Can’t say it really worked out for RB who people say can still be heard walking through Walgreens holding Kyrie’s lotion crying “come back”

Hindsight Grades:
Mavericks – A, most people thought it was an okay package at the time and he’d win his first title with Kyrie
Pistons – C, the trade that led the Pistons down a long road of being mid

Trade 15: Raptors – Clippers (7/16/24)
Clippers trade
DeMarcus Cousins (Traded for CHA picks and MPJ which led to Scottie Barnes)
Damion James

Raptors trade
Otto Porter Jr. (see all the above OPJ trades)
Kenneth Faried
Ben McLemore
Doug McDermott (NDL)
Paul Zipser (signed to MLE for matching)
Raptors 2017 FRP (#27, Kobi Simmons)
Nets 2017 FRP (top 7 protections carrying over) [#20, Zach Collins, traded for 1269 RP]
Clippers 2018 FRP (#14, Collin Sexton)
Raptors 2018 FRP (#24, Grayson Allen who would be traded for Melo)

X user @Matt said “Firsts Shmirsts, offer Bobby a trade with three former Bulls in it and it’s a shoo in. Paul zipser!!” GM Bobby in his post trade press conference remarked, “Confirmed woo has texted me maybe 25 times in the last 3 months about boogie. Persistence is key!”

It was an interesting deal for the Clippers. I think most expected this to kick off a nice long rebuild until they landed Markelle Fultz in the draft and got feisty quickly after trading for Melo. Boogie would turn into an absolute monster in Toronto and guide them to numerous 50 win seasons and on deep playoff runs.

Hindsight Grade:
Raptors – A
Clippers – B, sadly the picks didn’t turn out great and OPJ wouldn’t last long in LA

Trade 16: Magic – Spurs (7/8/24)
Magic Trade:
Jaylen Brown (see above)
Tyus Jones (see above)
Jeremy Lamb (Traded with 250 RP for Willie Green and Wade Baldwin)

Spurs Trade:
Kawhi Leonard (Traded for all sorts of stuff)
L/F of 2017 ORL/SAS SRP

Live Journal user @Broseph said “this is interesting” and @Stoneman said “Excited to see how Kawhi develops in Orlando!” All in all, boring.

Kawhi would receive 2 shooting pick ‘ems and blossom into a top 3 SF in SLN. He had a great 5-6 run in Orlando and won lots of games. Tyus and Jaylen blossomed in San Antonio before getting Boredo’d above. Jeremy Lamb was salary filler in this deal and wouldn’t fully stand out until returning to Orlando in a later trade, kinda crazy how that turned out.

Hindsight Grade:
Magic – A-, didn’t win a title you loser
Spurs – A-, the value was great, the trades that came after were hit and miss

Trade 17 and the inspo for the article: Bucks – Hawks (6/28/24)
Bucks Trade:
Kevin Durant (🐐)
Jordan Hill
Carlos Delfino

Hawks Trade:
Brad Beal (Traded for Middleton and 300 RP)
Paul Pierce (Traded for 250 RP)
Bismack Biyombo (Traded with Petro for ATL 17 [#16 Luke Kornet, left in FA] and NYK 18 [#27 Aaron Holiday]
DET 17 FRP (#10, Traded with Jason Thompson to get MIL 17 which was #3, Donovan Mitchell, which led to Trae Young)
ATL 18 FRP (Traded to get off Gilbert Arenas)
ATL 19 FRP (#25, Goga Bitadze who was traded with MIL20 and DAL 21 for CoJo, Al Horford, and Julian Wright, “Can’t really afford to camp Goga so hopefully he can flourish in Denver” [Editor’s note, FLOURISHED])
ATL 20 FRP (#28, Skylar Mays)
ATL 21 FRP (#29, traded to move up 1 spot to take Josh Giddey who was traded for Trae Young)

@Swamp said at the time “woah” a man of many words. @wooohahh said “Hawk TUAH”. @RBEEEEZY was a poet laureate with “dang”. @Matt commented “and the central gets tougher” [Editor’s note, he didn’t know how right he was]. @Joe posted “This is fun!”…was it fun for everyone else?

The trade that turned Kevin Durant into the SLN GOAT *makes goat nosies*. 3-Peat. 4 straight finals. A god in the playoffs. We may see better trade returns but I doubt we’ll ever get more impactful ones. Meanwhile in Milwaukee, a dynasty starting in Atlanta ruined these picks, Brad Beal was a turnover machine, and Bismack wouldn’t truly shine until moving to New York.

Hindsight Grades:
Hawks - 🐐
Bucks – C-

Trade 18: Rockets – Bullets (6/17/24)
Bullets Trade
CP3 (Traded for the corpse of Gilbert Arenas)

Rockets Trade
Richard Jefferson
Isaiah Canaan
Kobe
Hou 18 (#7, Deandre Ayton who became Anthony Davis)
HOU 19 (#7, Naz Reid)
HOU 20 (#3, Tyrese Maxey)

@TPeetz posted “Wow” and @@MantyLovesWizardCavs said “Thanks for sending good players out west. Still East>West”

The core of the Bullets roster and the beginning of the longest tank ever started with this trade. Was there brotherly collusion? No. But this deal probably couldn’t have gone worse for Nolan. CP3 was really just not that great.

Hindsight Grades:
Bullets – A+
Rockets – C-

So there you have it, 18 star trades…god knows how many smaller trades. I don’t know if I even have a conclusion? I’d say in the majority of these deals, just ponying up for the star was worth it. You just better be right on the star. There’s a wide gulf between OPJ and KD or Boban and CP3. Big balls trades are how legends get made. Let’s make more of em!!!
