Eight trades I'd like to see at the deadline

Post by jwoo »

For some reason I originally posted this in completed trades lol, my bad

The trade deadline is upon us and I'm bored in Texas and our pipes froze over, so I cooked up some food for thought in the form of fake trades, everyone's favorite. If any of these deals get done I should get an 100 RP kicker. I was trying to get to 10 trades but ran out of time (need to do some work) so here are eight of them!

***

Hawks trade
DeAndre Jordan

Clippers trade
Josh Hart
Monta Ellis
Collin Sexton
Sandro Mamu

The Clips have been looking for a better big. This solves for that without them having to spend draft capital. LAC does punt on a bit of depth, but also gets off of a bit of long-term money and becomes more flexible. The Hawks would be down a center, but this would make them a lot more flexible too and give them the ability to target a different center via trade. You could also swap in Okongwu for Mamu to address that.

***

Warriors trade
Jayson Tatum
Klay Thompson
Marcus Morris

Lakers trade
Paul George

GSW beefs up for a title run. The Lakers get younger and more cost-controlled with Tatum as they retool without their picks for another couple of seasons, and also pick up some cap flexibility. PG is still excellent and could get the Warriors over the top. Tatum has become solid if not a star and could get a little more offensive opportunity on the Lakers. Both GMs probably say no to this in the comments, but I don't hate it!

***

Celtics trade
James Harden

Spurs trade
Jabari Parker
Nic Claxton
Spurs 2023 FRP
Knicks 2025 FRP

Boston gets to transition into the Morant era and get some value for Harden at age 33 while sending him west. Jabari gives them perimeter firepower, Claxton is a useful young butt, the picks aren't great but give the Celts some extra chips, especially if SA misses the playoffs. The Spurs will have to pay Harden's next deal, which might be a little cumbersome at his age, but they get a star PG to play around for the next couple seasons at a reasonable cost.

***

Nuggets trade
Ricky Rubio
DEN 2027 FRP

Timberwolves trade
Langston Galloway
Michael Beasley

Give Galloway credit, he's been really solid for a long time and has aged well even on that deal. This would give Minnesota some extra cap flexibility and an asset and gives the Nugs a bit more offensive firepower and positional defense for the playoff run. Seems like a win-win although the T-Wolves have been inactive in the trade market of late and seem intent on hanging on to Giannis and KAT.

***

Blazers trade
Lauri Markkanen
Steven Adams

Jazz trade
Jordan Bell
Luol Deng
2026 UTA FRP (top six protected)

Markkanen has become a little bit superfluous in Portland but still has some interesting upside at his age/with his skillset. Utah needs to get younger in a smart way and could extract some value in a deal like this. The protected pick covers major downside, Lauri and Adams bolster the rotation and fit well with FVV and Derrick Jones, and the Jazz get clear of Deng's Money in case he doesn't retire. Bell would deepen Portland's frontcourt. The Jazz sacrifice shot-blocking but might gain in the long run here in terms of sustaining their roster depth.

***

Knicks trade
Josh Okogie
DEN 2023 FRP

Rockets trade
Michael Porter Jr.

Some people are going to hate this — but I think this buffs New York's rebounding with MPJ in a key bench role, and gives Houston a similar caliber of player they can market plus a small asset that is the worst of the Knicks' three FRPs in this draft to grease the wheels (the Rockets are tanking and don't have much reason to deal otherwise so I thought a tiny fee would be fine to balance it). I think MPJ's boards make him a pretty unique perimeter player. NYK could maybe start him at SF and slide Turner to PF and have rebounding coverage. Jalen Green is poised to take over at SG for New York in the long term it seems. Okogie is very good but wonder if MPJ would be a better fit!

***

Grizzlies trade
Kris Dunn
VAN 2025 FRP
some RP

Rockets trade
Pascal Siakam
Obi Toppin

This is an exchange of undesirable contracts that saves the Grizz a little bit of money while adding some frontcourt depth. Toppin is a bad rebounder but not that bad otherwise and helps Vancouver get a little younger. Obi also duplicates Banchero who should be the long-term PF for the Rockets. Houston picks up an asset to take on a little extra money, and can experiment with Dunn to see if his value can be rehabbed at all (or just use him as a tank commander at PG).

***

Bulls trade
Edmond Sumner
some RP

Pistons trade
Harrison Barnes

This is a tiny boring trade but gives the Bulls a true SF to plug the gaps with Otto out until the playoffs. Detroit gets a cheap flier on Sumner, who probably won't get camps but might deserve them if one could in theory afford it.
