2016 SLN Draft Position Rankings

Post by Merv »

I have 3 first round picks. So this could be my real rankings or typical SLN propaganda. We’ll never know! 😶‍🌫️

Point Guard
1. Jamal Murray
Feels like all of the can play PG stip guys turn out really good except for Milos Teodosic, but hey, he’s good at tanking. Jamal looks like he’ll be a total bucket. High end is something like Jamal Crawford, lower end is Damian Lillard. I think these all offense, no defense guards have to be truly elite scorers to have real utility otherwise they’re all relegated to super sub duty.

2. Ben Simmons
Is he an inside offense dream? Probably not, the bad FT shooting could be a total killer to his offensive value. If he’s at PG I could see a John Wall shooting, LeBron everything else kind of player. Whatever that is. The backup 3/4/5 thing is really intriguing, and if you do that, do you keep him at SF or move him to C for big butt development? Fascinating conundrum

3. Dejounte Murray
Really fun notes. Seems like he has a chance to be solid all around and super stealy. He won’t get PG camps so his handles won’t get organically much better. Would definitely scout his strength, if he can be a legit SG, then he could add a ton of lineup optionality

4. Fred VanVleet
Feels like a future IRL Mike Conley in the sense of solid but not a star. Fred is a pretty simple eval and should be a nice PG to have around for whoever takes him

5. Malcolm Brogdon
C pot but can’t go to NDL? Hmmm 🤔. Seems like a ready made backup day 1 who could blossom into a lower tier starter with luck. Interested to see where he goes with his name brand but Malcolm seems solid

Shooting Guard
1. Buddy Hield
He’s basically Tim Hardaway Jr. which as far as I can tell, is a solid player.

2. Denzel Valentine
Dominated college and well liked by a bunch of scouts before the 16 draft, Denzel has chance to be solid in SLN. Notes kind of make him sound like Gary Harris. Should be a fringe starter type if TCs go well

3. Caris LeVert
Think Caris is a high variance guy. If the TCs hit and the outside comes along, he could be a steal but iffy handles and needing TC Jesus is a scary proposition. We’ve seen guys like this fail, I’d enjoy it if Caris made it

4. Bryn Forbes
NDL special. High outside and nothing else. Doug McDermott but not white and really short. However, these guys usually get crazy gains in the NDL and can find their way to being useful

5. Malik Beasley
Had an ok NBA career. His ratings look fine for a guy destined to go mid 20s. Notes were solid. Wouldn’t shock me if he was the 3rd SG off the board.

Small Forward
1. Brandon Ingram
To quote one elite scout in 2016, “the lanky, sweet-shooting Ingram continues to capture scouts’ imaginations with his scoring potential.” This holds true in SLN. BI looks like the best scorer in this draft file. He’ll probably need a strength camp and could be due for a switch to SG. I expect Brandon to hear his name called first overall.

2. Jaylen Brown
Another candidate for the first overall pick. Ashes clearly found some idiot who thought Gerald Green was a better player? Jaylen has the promise of being a two way force. Not quite an elite scorer but solid with great defense. He’ll need all offense camps.

3. Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot
Another guy people loved IRL that didn’t quite pan out. TLC looks like the second coming of Thabo with maybe better volume. The shooting will need work but he’s destined to be a sick wing defender with solid steals.

4. Danuel House
DHOUUUUUSE. He’s a rap producer. Check it out, 4daHouse. Looks like your standard 3 and D type.

5. Derrick Jones Jr.
That inside has to be jumping boosted. DJJ has some serious bunnies and should be a lock for the dunk contest. He’s a good defender IRL and will likely be stocky in SLN. Fun dart throw later in the first

Power Forward
1. Domas Sabonis
I freaking loved this dude at Gonzaga. Never understood how the experts didn’t see him being more than just a guy. SLN Domas is kind of built like Boogie Cousins. Dark horse candidate for 1st overall? He’s the type of guy the mock draft folks at ESPN would be like, “Risacher is the likely pick, but Donovan Clingan is really gaining momentum with the Hawks.” I bet Domas is a walking double double and will be an absolute problem. Just imagine if he ends up with TC luck to get blocks a la Eddy Curry

2. Pascal Siakam
It’s hard to go against a guy who has made an All NBA team for Marquese Chriss. I’ve wondered how Pascal would be shaped for SLN for a while. Notes like he’ll be well rounded with good upside. Can see him off the board early. Would think he’s a guy that gets switched to SF.

3. Marquese Chriss
Something about his profile really excited me. Marquese was a ball of clay that never really came good. SLN is the perfect place to fix that! Can see him being pretty stocky and a potentially fun big butt with luck

4. Henry Ellenson
Kevin Love but can play SF? I bet he gets roasted defensively for being glacially slow. The ultimate SLN reclamation project here. He has the highest scouted pot in the file. These type of guys scare me but would be awesome to see him come good for someone else

5. Dragan Bender
Remember when he went 4th?! Tough draft for Phoenix. Dragan is kind of shaped like Ryan Anderson who has found ways to be useful. Would hope he’s better than that and can’t wait to find out

Center
1. Jakob Poeltl
As Jesse once noted, this doesn’t feel much like IRL Poeltl. Think he’ll have a lot of potential and have a chance to be a good big butt. The only question is if he’ll shoot too much.

2. Ivica Zubac
If Zu better than Jakob? Maybe. It’s kind of 1a 1b in my head. Zu is 19 and comes in with B rebounding in a non rebounding era. That’s spicy.

3. Thon Maker
Just give him a chance guys. Don’t look at yearbooks. He swears he’s 19

4. Damian Jones
Will be developed as a big butt. Probably is serviceable.

5. Georgios Papagiannis
Can’t tell me he’s not gonna be a Laker. Rumor has it GX has spent the last week at his games scouting in Greece and they need a 5. This is the kind of draft intel you read this far about bad players for.
